Can I Get Debt Help If I’m on Benefits?

We hear this all the time: “I’m on benefits - does that mean I can’t get debt help?”

The answer is simple: yes, you absolutely can.

At Dexter Bell, we’ve supported people receiving Universal Credit, PIP, or ESA.

What matters isn’t the label on your income, it’s whether we can build a plan that protects your essentials and helps you move forward.

Why being on benefits doesn’t stop you getting help

Debt doesn’t pick and choose. Job loss, illness, or the rising cost of living can tip anyone into difficulty. Being on benefits doesn’t shut the door to solutions.

Here’s how it works in practice:

  • Debt Management Plan (DMP): Informal, flexible, and confidential. We help you roll your debts into one affordable monthly payment. We’ll speak to creditors and get interest and charges frozen.
  • IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement): A formal, legally binding option. Usually 5–6 years long, with qualifying debt written off at the end if you stick to it. If this is right for you, we’ll prepare your case and then hand it over to one of our trusted Insolvency Practitioner partners.
  • DRO or Bankruptcy: Sometimes, especially with lower debts or very limited income, a Debt Relief Order (via a charity) or bankruptcy might be best. If that’s the case, we’ll be upfront and point you in the right direction.

What we look at with you

When you speak to us, we don’t just glance at your debt. We look at your whole situation:

  • Your income (benefits included)
  • Your essential bills – food, housing, heating, travel
  • Who you owe and roughly how much

From there, we work out what’s realistic. Creditors can only expect fair payments, not ones that leave you choosing between food or bills. If you don’t have enough to pay your creditors, we’ll explain your options.

  • Debt advice is for everyone, no matter your income source.
  • We don’t judge. Our job is to help.
  • Once you’re on a structured plan, creditors have to treat you fairly.

Our final word

Being on benefits doesn’t block you from debt help. What matters is building a plan that puts your essentials first and gives time from debt pressure.

You don’t have to face this alone. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Use the benefits checker to see if you are entitled to benefits or further enhances.
